2024 National Legislative Day

[updated 14Feb24]

2024 "Leg Day" planned for Thursday, 29 Feb 2024 in Washington, DC

Cadet Opportunity to Attend National Legislative Day in Washington D.C.

Greetings AKWG Cadet Officers,

This is your friendly Government Liaison speaking. I am looking for two (2) cadets to attend National Legislative Day (NLD) on February 29, 2024, in Washington, D.C. with myself, AK Wing Commander Col MacPherson, Col Tim Verrett (Regional Legal Officer), and perhaps one or two other senior members. Here is an overview of NLD from last year: https://www.capnhq.gov/NL/2023LegislativeDay/content/index.html#/.

I can confirm that we will actually be meeting with Senator Dan Sullivan and briefly with Senator Lisa Murkowski. We will be meeting with Rep Mary Peltola's staff (which is equally as important!). This opportunity will help cadets who will be requesting Congressional nominations for U.S. Service Academies this coming fall.

What I need from you is a keen eye to ID cadets who fit the following criteria:

  • Currently a Junior in High School
  • Planning to apply to one or more of the US Service Academies
  • Available on either 22 Jan (4-5:30 PM AKT) or 25 Jan (5-6:30 PM AKT) for ambassador training
  • Available ~28 Feb-3 Mar to travel to Washington, DC (travel expenses paid by AKWG)
  • Preference for well-spoken, higher ranking cadets

I would prefer you send me a list of names, so that I may reach out directly. However, if someone is very enthusiastic, you may give them the link to the Google form application: https://forms.gle/9NsBx6BiCtfsEAda7. We expect to close the application period on 15 Jan with interviews to follow if there is abundant interest.

If there are additional questions, please don't hesitate to email me directly.

Thank you,

Capt Samantha "Reux" Stearns

Early February Update from Capt Reux Stearns, AKWG Legislative Liaison

There is not a guide for 2024 that I am aware of. There will be an NLD app that National Headquarters should be released by this Friday or soon thereafter.

1. Col MacPherson is working on finalizing flights and will have an answer for you shortly.

2. Cadets should all be arriving on 2/28. We will have a refresher training and advanced briefing that night when we go to pick up the packets at the Crystal Marriott. We are likely to meet at 3 PM. There are three Congressional meetings on 2/29 that will last until around 3 PM. Friday will likely be the Smithsonian or another museum.

3. Money for meals - all meals will need to be provided for on 2/28 as a travel day, as well as breakfast and dinner on 2/29 and any subsequent days in DC/transit. I will buy the cadets lunch on 2/29 for NLD. Assuming the cadets leave on Saturday, that is 11 meals. I would not except the average cost to exceed $15, but with an margin, I would plan for $175.

4. There are two apps for transport. SmarTrip and DC Metro that I would recommend. SmarTrip lets you preload a metro card - and you could add it directly to Apple Wallet if you have an iPhone. There are options to get a three-day unlimited pass for $28, or a lump amount can be added. Regular fares are typically around $2. If not purchasing the pass, I would budget for around $25. The cards/fares can also be directly purchased at most metro stations, certainly the airport.

5. Primaries for supervision are the MacPhersons, Col Sammons, Col Verett, and myself. There will be other senior members from various Wings in the hotel and present on the Hill.

6. This was covered in the NLD cadet briefing the week of 1/22. To recap, expect it to be high 50s/low 60s during the day, dropping to low 40s at night. I think a parka would be overkill, especially on the Hill, but consider a warm jacket.

7. Regarding uniforms, I am attaching a photo from last year’s NLD to demonstrate uniform standards under CAPR 39-1. Please refer to that publication, especially the grooming standards for hair.
