CONGRATULATIONS, GRADUATES!!

Once you have graduated from the 2023 Alaska Wing Summer Encampment, you are eligible for many benefits.

Cadet Wings application: Starting 1 July, you can apply for flight scholarships called "Cadet Wings." More information is available here: https://akwg.cap.gov/programs/cp/flighttraining

CadetInvest Registration $$$(1 October - 30 December every year): Scholarships & financial assistance for flight training, NCSAs, college, etc.  *ALL* cadets are encouraged to register with at least the bare minimum information so they are then eligible for activities they may not yet know they will be involved in (National Cadet Competition, which won't be decided until April, for example).  Involvement in all CAP activities improves cadets' chances of selection for funding. Go here for more info: https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/programs/cadets/cadetinvest

NCSA (National Cadet Special Activity) Registration (1 December-15 January every year): Hawk Mountain, Blue Beret, Glider & Powered Flight Academies, SUPTs, Space Ops Familiarization, Honor Guard Academies, several activities at the US Air Force Academy, International Air Cadet Exchange, and more!--you've heard other cadets talk about the amazing experiences they have had, and you'll hear even more as 20+ AKWG cadets return from this summer's activities.  Start checking 1 December on this website to see which NCSAs will be offered, and check back regularly over the following weeks to see which get added.  Start your application online following the instructions on the website.  Add, delete and reprioritize as much as you like until 15 January (the "ontime deadline") then do not touch your application or it will be marked as late.  It's OK to apply late, it's just waaaaayyyy better if you apply ontime.  https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/programs/cadets/activities/national-cadet-special-activities

Encampment Advanced Training Flights/Squadrons: As you may have seen with our Advanced Training Flight this year, advanced encampment students get to practice their leadership skills and take them to the next level.  Some encampments focus on specific training areas (rocketry badges, sUAS training, Cybersecurity, etc) and some focus on a variety of skills like Alaska Wing's did this summer.  Advanced students emerge very well-prepared to staff and lead in their home squadrons, at future encampments, and at various other CAP activities, and outside of CAP. A few months before encampments start, they are listed here: https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/programs/cadets/activities/encampment

Encampment Staffing: You are now eligible to apply to staff Alaska Wing *and* other states' encampments--even this year!  For example, Oregon Wing is currently accepting cadre applications for their 26 Dec 2023-3 Jan 2024 Encampment (https://orwg.cap.gov/directorates/cadet-programs/winter-raptor-encampment23

RESOURCES FOR YOU:  And because you are probably more motivated than ever to know about everything you can do in CAP, here are additional resources to stay actively involved and advance your education and training.  Spread the word!

Squadron Websites: Many squadrons have their own websites, detailing upcoming events and activities.  To see if your squadron has a website, go here: https://akwg.cap.gov/about/units

Alaska Wing Websitehttps://akwg.cap.gov/

The Alaska Wing Cadet Programs webpage: This webpage is a great source of information about everything cadet-related in Alaska Wing.  New information is constantly added as we build out this new resource, so check back often.  Encourage your adult leaders to also peruse this page:  https://akwg.cap.gov/programs/cp  Topics include:

  • Cadet Awards
  • Resources for SMs who work with cadets
  • Upcoming TLC classes for SMs
  • Cadet Advisory Council (CAC)
  • Fundraising
  • Scholarships
  • SMs who are excited to mentor you (former cadets, service academy grads, active duty SMs and more!)
  • Check back frequently for more

The Alaska Wing Calendar: AKWG Cadet Activities are listed, often with details provided, on the Alaska Wing Google Calendar: https://akwg.cap.gov/wingcal/wingcal

Pacific Region Website: Sometimes you can find great information here, and links to other wings in the Pacific Region: https://pcr.cap.gov/https://pcr.cap.gov/

National Website (Public): You're already familiar with www.gocivilairpatrol.com.  Now check out the Cadet Programs Activities section in more detail now that you are eligible to apply for nearly everything listed! https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/programs/cadets/activities

NHQ Website (Private) aka eServices:

2024 AKWG Summer Encampment: Save the Date! next year's Alaska summer encampment is tentatively scheduled for June 16-22, with staff starting on 13 June 2024.  Keep your eyes open in January 2024 for staff application solicitations.  Registration for staff and students, including advanced students, will open in early 2024.

Staying connected: After Encampment, students often like to remain in contact with their new friends and colleagues.  To most effectively, safely do that, we highly recommend all Alaska Wing CAP members activate and use their free CAP GMail.  When using your CAP GMail, the email addresses of all other Alaska CAP members who use their CAP Emails autofill.  You will also have access to the entire GSuite of products in the AKWG domain, which cadets are using more and more frequently.  You will also notice that nearly all of the high-ranking cadets in AKWG use their CAP GMails.  Instructions on accessing your CAP GMail and updating your contact information in eServices can be found here: https://akwg.cap.gov/programs/cp/news/google

Again, congratulations on this great accomplishment, graduation from the 2023 Alaska Wing Summer Encampment!

6/6/23 UPDATE

Payment status has been updated on the registration tracking spreadsheet, reflecting all payments (or promises to pay by check) as of 4pm on Monday 6/5/23.  Thank you for your prompt payment!

5/30/23 UPDATE

Invoices were emailed out on 5/30/23.  If you do not see your invoice, please check your spam folders and other email accounts.  We do not have a way to determine whether it goes into your spam folder or not.  Several registrants did not provide a valid email address, in which case we emailed invoices to the cadet's and parent's email addresses in eServices.  So please also check your other email accounts for your invoice.  We apologize for the delay in sending out invoices.  Please note that this is a new process, still a vast improvement on prior years where everyone had to print, complete, scan, & upload six required forms. We appreciate your patience and your prompt payment.  We will update the registration tracking spreadsheet showing payment as often as we can, which may be only once a week.  Your cadet will not be removed from encampment for non-payment until we have made multiple attempts to contact you for payment, or until you request to have them unregistered.

5/26/23 UPDATE

The Registration Tracking spreadsheet was updated 5/26/23.  Cadets whose payment has been received (either from NHQ or the cadet) are updated with a green square in the payment column.  Additional invoices will be sent out in late May or early June.  Please email encampment@akwg.cap.gov as soon as possible if you (the cadet) are no longer planning to attend.

4/26/23 UPDATE

The application window for CEAP (Cadet Encampment Assistance Program) closes 4/30/23. Seventeen cadets indicated they planned to apply for CEAP but have not done so as of 4/26/23.  If you are unsure whether you have completed your application, follow the instructions below to apply again. If you have already applied, you will not be able to apply again. Receiving CEAP is not guaranteed.

ENCAMPMENT DESCRIPTION

The 2023 AKWG Summer Encampment is a week-long activity that serves to provide the cadet with a foundation from which to build on their Civil Air Patrol careers.  The encampment will provide cadets with the opportunity to:

  • Apply knowledge gained in the cadet and senior programs to practical situations.
  • Develop a greater understanding of Civil Air Patrol and Air Force missions and capabilities.
  • Develop leadership potential, discipline, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Learn how to overcome challenges and succeed through critical thinking.
  • Enhance their local unit’s cadet program.
  • Aid in retention and motivation.
  • Receive an introduction to the military-style training of the Civil Air Patrol.
  • Build self-confidence.
  • Experience esprit de corps and the warrior spirit.

First-time cadets can expect to be challenged both mentally and physically during a busy and exciting week of hands-on leadership development training, aerospace events and local on-site activities.  Cadets returning as staff will be challenged even further through the leadership roles they will fill and staff duties they will perform.  All cadets will be introduced to the military, learn to overcome challenges, develop time-management skills, enhance their interpersonal skills and have a great time.

The Pre-Encampment Guide, which provides detailed information about the encampment, is attached as a link at the right side of this page.  The last page of the Pre-Encampment Guide the all-important STUDENT Packing List!  Cadet Cadre and SM Staff packing lists may be included at a later date on the Cadre (Staff) webpage.

REGISTRATION

Types of Registrants

Cadet  First-time Student: A first-time encampment attendee, or a returning cadet that did not graduate from a previous encampment, is a Cadet Student.

Cadet Advance Training Flight (ATF) Student: A student who has previously graduated from an encampment as a first-time student and is attending again as a student is an ATF Student.

Please read this entire webpage before you start the registration process.  You will be asked to confirm that you read this entire webpage when you register.

Several forms are required for registration.  Information requested on the forms is listed below.  You can save your work mid-registration, so make sure you have all of your information and people who need to sign available when you register.

Multiple registrants in the same family must register separately.

If your information changes after you have completed the registration process (e.g., email address, phone number, mailing address, etc.), email the updated information to encampment@akwg.cap.gov, and please include the cadet's CAPID, last name, first name, and "Updated Contact Information" in the subject line.

Cadet Student (First-time & Advanced Training Flight (ATF))

If you are going to or have already applied for CEAP, click the corresponding radio button in the application.  If you are offered CEAP funding by National Headquarters, you will not be invoiced.  If you are not selected for CEAP funding, you will be invoiced and responsible for the cost of the encampment.  An invoice with payment instructions will be sent to you via email.

Cadet Cadre

The 2023 AKWG Summer Encampment Commander reserves the right to prioritize slots to ensure an equitable distribution of slots across the units of the Alaska Wing as well as targeting cadets who are at/above the cadet grade of Cadet Senior Master Sergeant.

PREPARATION

All encampment participants will experience long, demanding, and very active days.  Cadets can expect to be active 16 hours a day.  To be successful at the encampment, prior preparation is critical.  Arrive at the encampment with the correct equipment, well-rested, and hydrated.  Proper hydration will help prevent many common encampment injuries and serve to keep you healthy during a demanding week. Cadets should study available encampment materials prior to encampment.  Links to the CAP encampment guide, handbook, and study materials are provided below.

The most common injury at encampment is blisters from brand-new boots.  Cadets will spend a lot of time on their feet.  Buy your boots and dress shoes well ahead of the encampment and break them in before encampment starts.

Videos showing typical encampment activities are provided in a playlist on the Alaska Wing YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/@alaskacap

TRANSPORTATION

Cadet students arriving from out of the local area via airlines should arrive at the Anchorage International Airport on the morning of 18 June 2023.  All cadets planning to arrive at the Anchorage International Airport will be contacted by the Transportation Officer and arrangements will be made to transport those cadets to the encampment and back to the airport at the end of the encampment.  Attendees leaving the encampment via airlines should plan on arriving at the Anchorage airport no earlier than 2100 hours (9 pm) on Saturday 24 June 2023.

All current Federal, State of Alaska and CAP travel guidance will be followed.

Cadet students arriving from distant squadrons via ground transportation before 14:00 on 18 June 2023 should coordinate their arrival with the Encampment Commander.

Lodging, food or ground transportation will not be available for cadet students arriving before 14:00 on 18 June 2023.

Privately-Owned Vehicles

Cadets who drive to encampment must turn in their vehicle keys to the senior staff upon arrival.  Cadets, including cadet staff/cadre, will not drive during encampment unless specifically directed to do so.

ARRIVAL / IN-PROCESSING

Cadet cadre will arrive at encampment on Thursday, 15 June 2023 between {start/end time TBD}.  They will be contacted in advance, and detailed check-in and arrival arrangements will be provided.

Cadet students shall arrive between 14:00 and 15:00 (2:00 and 3:00 pm) Alaska time on Sunday, 18 June 2023 for in-processing.  The arrival point will be the parking lot at the BONIFACE GATE VISITOR CONTROL CENTER FOR JBER.  Uniformed CAP personnel will be at the gate and will help cadets board CAP vehicles to be transported to the encampment.

Parents please note: this will likely be the last time that you will see or hear from your child until graduation at 18:30 on Saturday, 24 June 2023.  Be sure to say goodbye to your child when dropping them off, and please make sure they have been well fed before arriving, as lunch will not be served on the first day.

Cadets will not drive themselves on base to the encampment.  Cadets that drive themselves to the Boniface gate will have to arrange for a vehicle escort onto base and will turn in their vehicle keys once parked at the encampment site.

Early or late arrivals must be coordinated with the Encampment Commander.

LODGING

Families can count on CAP to provide a safe, wholesome environment at all cadet activities.  Cadet life is a regimented experience marked by firm rules, clear consequences, and ample adult supervision.  Most of all, leadership by positive example is our best tool for creating a space where cadets can thrive.

Answers to the following questions can be found on the CAP Website by clicking here

What is the lodging situation at an overnight cadet activity?

How can families support young cadets preparing for their first time away from home?

What if our family has concerns about the lodging arrangements at an overnight activity?

What is the lodging practice for LGBT cadets?

Are lodging facilities accessible to disabled cadets?

VISITATION

Visitors are not allowed or authorized at encampment without written permission (may be via email) directly from the Encampment Commander.  The encampment takes place on a military installation and, due to Department of Defense security requirements and for the safety and security of all CAP personnel, unscheduled or uncoordinated visitation is prohibited.  This restriction applies to family and friends of encampment participants as well as CAP members not assigned to the encampment.
