ENCAMPMENT DESCRIPTION

The 2024 AKWG Summer Encampment is a week-long activity that serves to provide the cadet with a foundation from which to build on their Civil Air Patrol careers.  The encampment will provide cadets with the opportunity to:

  • Apply knowledge gained in the cadet and senior programs to practical situations.
  • Develop a greater understanding of Civil Air Patrol and Air Force missions and capabilities.
  • Develop leadership potential, discipline, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Learn how to overcome challenges and succeed through critical thinking.
  • Enhance their local unit’s cadet program.
  • Aid in retention and motivation.
  • Receive an introduction to the military-style training of the Civil Air Patrol.
  • Build self-confidence.
  • Experience esprit de corps and the warrior spirit.

First-time cadets can expect to be challenged both mentally and physically during a busy and exciting week of hands-on leadership development training, aerospace events and local on-site activities.  Cadets returning as staff will be challenged even further through the leadership roles they will fill and staff duties they will perform.  All cadets will be introduced to the military, learn to overcome challenges, develop time-management skills, enhance their interpersonal skills and have a great time.

PREPARATION

All encampment participants will experience long, demanding, and very active days.  Cadets can expect to be active 16 hours a day.  To be successful at the encampment, prior preparation is critical.  Arrive at the encampment with the correct equipment, well-rested, and hydrated.  Proper hydration will help prevent many common encampment injuries and serve to keep you healthy during a demanding week. Cadets should study available encampment materials prior to encampment.  Links to the CAP encampment guide, handbook, and study materials are provided below.

The most common injury at encampment is blisters from brand-new boots.  Cadets will spend a lot of time on their feet.  Buy your boots and dress shoes well ahead of the encampment and break them in before encampment starts.

Videos showing typical encampment activities are provided in a playlist on the Alaska Wing YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/@alaskacap

TRANSPORTATION

Cadet students arriving from out of the local area via airlines should arrive at the Anchorage International Airport on the morning of 16 June 2024.  All cadets planning to arrive at the Anchorage International Airport will be contacted by the Transportation Officer and arrangements will be made to transport those cadets to the encampment and back to the airport at the end of the encampment.  Attendees leaving the encampment via airlines should plan on arriving at the Anchorage airport no earlier than 2100 hours (9 pm) on Saturday 22 June 2024.

LODGING

Families can count on CAP to provide a safe, wholesome environment at all cadet activities.  Cadet life is a regimented experience marked by firm rules, clear consequences, and ample adult supervision.  Most of all, leadership by positive example is our best tool for creating a space where cadets can thrive.

Answers to the following questions can be found on the CAP Website by clicking here

What is the lodging situation at an overnight cadet activity?

How can families support young cadets preparing for their first time away from home?

What if our family has concerns about the lodging arrangements at an overnight activity?

What is the lodging practice for LGBT cadets?

Are lodging facilities accessible to disabled cadets?

VISITATION

Visitors are not allowed or authorized at encampment without written permission (may be via email) directly from the Encampment Commander.  The encampment takes place on a military installation and, due to Department of Defense security requirements and for the safety and security of all CAP personnel, unscheduled or uncoordinated visitation is prohibited.  This restriction applies to family and friends of encampment participants as well as CAP members not assigned to the encampment.

MOVE TO TOP OF WEBPAGE AFTER ENCAMPMENT:

CONGRATULATIONS, FUTURE GRADUATES!!

Once you have graduated from the 2024 Alaska Wing Summer Encampment, you are eligible for many benefits.

Cadet Wings application: Starting 1 July, you can apply for flight scholarships called "Cadet Wings." More information is available here: https://akwg.cap.gov/programs/cp/flighttraining

CadetInvest Registration $$$(1 October - 15 Jan every year): Scholarships & financial assistance for flight training, NCSAs, college, etc.  *ALL* cadets are encouraged to register with at least the bare minimum information so they are then eligible for activities they may not yet know they will be involved in (National Cadet Competition, which won't be decided until April, for example).  Involvement in all CAP activities improves cadets' chances of selection for funding. Go here for more info: https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/programs/cadets/cadetinvest

NCSA (National Cadet Special Activity) Registration (1 December-15 January every year): Hawk Mountain, Blue Beret, Glider & Powered Flight Academies, SUPTs, Space Ops Familiarization, Honor Guard Academies, several activities at the US Air Force Academy, International Air Cadet Exchange, and more!--you've heard other cadets talk about the amazing experiences they have had, and you'll hear even more as 20+ AKWG cadets return from this summer's activities.  Start checking 1 December on this website to see which NCSAs will be offered, and check back regularly over the following weeks to see which get added.  Start your application online following the instructions on the website.  Add, delete and reprioritize as much as you like until 15 January (the "ontime deadline") then do not touch your application or it will be marked as late.  It's OK to apply late, it's just waaaaayyyy better if you apply on time.  https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/programs/cadets/activities/national-cadet-special-activities

Encampment Advanced Training School: Advanced encampment students get to practice their leadership skills and take them to the next level.  Some encampments focus on specific training areas (rocketry badges, sUAS training, Cybersecurity, etc) and some focus on a variety of skills like Alaska Wing's did in 2022 and 2023.  Advanced students emerge very well-prepared to staff and lead in their home squadrons, at future encampments, and at various other CAP activities, and outside of CAP. A few months before encampments start, they are listed here: https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/programs/cadets/activities/encampment

Encampment Staffing: You are now eligible to apply to staff Alaska Wing *and* other states' encampments--even this year!  For example, Oregon Wing usually accepts cadre applications for their ~26 Dec-3 Jan Encampments starting in June of each year (This website may have current info: https://orwg.cap.gov/directorates/cadet-programs)

RESOURCES FOR YOU:  And because you are probably more motivated than ever to know about everything you can do in CAP, here are additional resources to stay actively involved and advance your education and training.  Spread the word!

NHQ Website (Private) aka eServices:

Staying connected: After Encampment, students often like to remain in contact with their new friends and colleagues.  To most effectively, safely do that, we highly recommend all Alaska Wing CAP members activate and use their free CAP GMail.  When using your CAP GMail, the email addresses of all other Alaska CAP members who use their CAP Emails autofill.  You will also have access to the entire GSuite of products in the AKWG domain, which cadets are using more and more frequently.  You will also notice that nearly all of the high-ranking cadets in AKWG use their CAP GMails.  Instructions on accessing your CAP GMail and updating your contact information in eServices can be found here: https://akwg.cap.gov/programs/cp/news/google
